Our Origin
Tessera is the Greek word for four — and four represents the seasons of the year. A reminder that good food isn't a moment, it's a commitment. Ours is to bring you the same quality, every single season, without exception.
Our story starts with John Banis, born in 1948 on a small olive grove on the island of Lesvos, Greece. Growing up harvesting olives, cooking from scratch, and sharing meals the way Greeks do best — around a table, with people you love — food wasn't just a habit for John. It was a way of life. That love for real, honest ingredients never left him. In 2012, it became Tessera Foods — born in Greece, and brought to the US that same year.
What started as a passion for bringing exceptional Mediterranean flavors to more people has since grown into something bigger: a global pantry of carefully sourced ingredients, made for home cooks and professional kitchens alike.
Tessera in Greek stands for the number four. Four symbolizes the four seasons of the year —
a reflection of our commitment to delivering your favorite Tessera delicacies consistently,
all year round.
